So, another year’s gone by and we wonder how does it go so fast.
My father always told me, “The older you get, the quicker time passes.” Wow….was he right on that one
Me and Lisa had a great year both in business and with our family. We had a few bumps in the road, but we never let that get in the way of our vision and the goals we set for ourselves. I can’t stress that enough. You need to stay focused and keep the big picture crystal clear.
My question for you is, did you reach your goals for 2009? If not, what held you back from reaching them? Did you write them down? Did you create a plan?
I created the last video for 2009 that explains a simple technique that has worked time and time again for us.
The idea of sharing this with you happened the other day when I was cleaning out my office. I came across one of my notebooks that had some ideas and action steps that I wrote down back in August of 2008. I looked over what I wrote in that notebook and was really surprised at what we have achieved in such a short period of time.
Once again, this was proof to me that this technique really works.
In my notebook, I wrote down a plan to teach others about photography and help them get started. Keep in mind, we were starting all over again online. Yes, we did own an established photography studio in our town, but we were unknown in the online community. We had no idea how to get our message out there to others.
So, I created a plan to make some videos for Youtube, create a website, an Ebay store, an Amazon store and build a list of subscribers to share our photography experiences with and help them get started. I even wrote that we had just 860 subscribers on that day.
Well, it’s December 2009 exactly 16 months from the time I wrote that plan and we reached our goals and then some.
We successfully created our Ebay store where we sell our Digital Props & Backgrounds on CD’s and an Amazon store that sells the same products as Ebay. We created our NewPortraitBiz course that teaches a simple step by step plan to get new photographers started. This course has been a huge success.
After creating NPB, we added a private members forum that supports our students so they can help each other as they grow. We’ve had over 7 “Live” coaching calls that I never thought I would have the chance to offer. In the process of all this, we’ve created a list of over 6,000 subscribers and it’s growing everyday. We’ve also created some new friends and partners that we will have forever.
I’m not sharing this to brag, just to show you that we started over again from scratch and created a plan and took action. Everyone’s plan will be different and needs to be tailored to their specific goals. But…the bottom line is to create a plan and stick to it.
Here’s some of my Action Steps I follow every day and every year.
Step#1 – Write In A Notebook
Take an hour and write down what you want to achieve in 2010. What are your goals? Don’t just write down to make lots of money. Be specific and know the reason “Why?” What will it do for you and your family? How will it make your life better?
You need a clear picture as to why you are going to work hard towards these “Goals”.
Step #2 – Create A Plan
Now that you know what you want and why, create a detailed plan. If you want something in life, you need a plan to follow and there’s always a plan. Once you have a plan and break it down, you can see what it is that you need to do and create smaller action steps to follow. This will simplify things and help make each step smaller and easier to obtain.
Tip: Make sure to include the date on the top of everything you write, so you can come back and see how far you’ve come.
Step#3 – Work In Smaller Blocks Of Time
It’s always easier to set smaller chunks of time to work in. I like to work in 30, 60 and 90 day chunks because it gives you a deadline to finish those tasks. If you write them down, you will be accountable to complete them. It also allows you to reevaluate what’s working and what’s not. Now you can concentrate on what has worked. It’s pretty simple
Step #4 – Make A Commitment
This is a big mistake that a lot of us make and that’s to be consistent. We often wonder why we didn’t reach our goals, but it’s usually because we didn’t stick to our plan…if we even had one. You need to make a commitment to yourself and stick to the plan. Learn from everything you do…Good or Bad.
Step #5 – Write Daily
Make a commitment each day to take 5 minutes and write in a journal. List everything you did to work towards your goals. This can be a big game changer for you. This will keep you focused on the plan and also remind you why you’re doing this. If you write about it, it becomes real in our minds and the vision is crystal clear. This is very powerful.
Step #6 – Surround Yourself With Like Minded (Positive) People
It’s so important to surround yourself with a support system. This goes for anything in life. If you find people that are interested in the same things you are, you will stay focused and be supported in your plan. They don’t have to be doing exactly what you’re doing, but you want a positive support group that can help you…not hurt you.
When you hit a bump in the road, you need help getting back on track…not someone telling you “I Told You So”. Be mindful of who you let in your support group.
Tip: Model people that are where you want to be or better yet…even Bigger! Usually people aren’t successful by accident, they create a plan and stick to it. Follow what they do and you will be successful too!
Getting Started:
So to get started, here’s what I want you to do.
Post a comment below and tell us what you want to achieve in 2010. This way you’re taking the first step and documenting your vision. Next year at this time, you can come back to this blog post and see how you’ve done.
Remember, you may not reach all your goals the first time, but you’ll learn in the process and be that much closer to reaching them.
Now…it’s up to you to Take Action!
So…here’s a toast to much success for you and your family in 2010 ![]()
Happy New Year!
Scott & Lisa

Hi Scott and friends! I took the portrait party example and ran with it. For December, I set up two portrait parties. Each one lasted three hours. It was very casual. I offered each host a free portrait package and each guest a free 4×6 proof. I did bring a garment rack and some props. I cut a hole on the top end of a sheet and slide it on to the garment rack for a background. (My garment rack is an old hand me down that comes a part in pieces.) I found that none of the props were used. I also found that the homes had excellent background walls to use. The fist party had four families with total of eight children. The second had three families with two children and three infants. It was very beneficial to be able to swap between kids depending on thier moods and to get the best pics. I used mostly a white sheet and added digital backgrounds later. I posted them to my website and they began to buy! I also offered special pricing for the party people–40% off normal prices. I made the price list displaying the regular price and the discounted amounts. I got many referrals and two requests for additional parties after the first of the year. I look forward to make this a permananent gig in the future. Thanks so much for the idea! Deonna with LizzyArt.com
Scott,
Thanks for all the video’s this past year! I really get a lot from them!
For 2010, I want my new photo business(started 8/09) to get to the next level. I want to earn $2,000 per month in revenue. I’m having trouble getting the word out about my business. I don’t have the funds $$$ to do much advertising, and I’ve been hesitant about contacting businesses about joint ventures!
Your last “coaching call” about marketing the business gave me some ideas. I know I’m not the only one having these difficulties.
2010 is going to be my year to GET THIS BUSINESS GOING!
THANKS SCOTT!

Scott, I am a huge fan of Cindy Baxter with masterpiece studio in WV and also Lisa Jane in Houston. I want to know what they do and how they do it. I can’t afford the 10 to 20k Cindy charges for learning her franchise. I bought Lisa’s book , but it does not provide enough info on the techniques they use to gain the look. I would love if you could review this and perhaps help me with it. Thanks, Deonna.
Goal(s):
Increase wedding/event volume by 15% and decrease turn-around time for end product (albums etc) by 20%.
My goal for 2010 is:
1)Learn my camera 2)Make 40k this year so that I am closer to going full time to be with wife and kids more 3)Buy a new lens, better lights and back ground and have at least 200 new clients email addresses.
Hi Scott & Lisa,
Scott you are well known to us, but what does Lisa do behind the scenes? Another husband wife team has him photograph and she does the marketing.
What do I want out of 2010?
To be self sufficient via my Pet and Family Photography Business. My husband\’s HVAC business hasn\’t done as well as I would like (he doesn\’t have someone like you to guide and direct him)and the bills have been a super problem every Dec – March. I wish to have enough income that we can 1. pay bills on time 2. I can go to training classes etc when I feel the need 3. Have enough money to buy gifts for some of the occasions 4. Have enough income to go on a real vacation. 5. have enough income to contribute to build my business and fix what needs repairing around the house. 6. And be able to quit my part time job.
To learn to use my camera and Adobe CS4 better. Why? If I learned more tips and tricks it would not take me as long to manipulate my images for the clients 1. if I handled my camera better I wouldn\’t have the need to balance color etc so much.
Figure out a better way to promote myself, market myself, advertise to get a better clientele of people in my target market.
Scott since this is getting very long I will continue on my own, but…I have a chance to go to a Pet Expo where 10,000 people are expected to be (no fee, & they can bring their animals). What an opportunity to promote myself!! Cost $450.00 for 8 hours, one day in a 10 x 10 space in the coliseum. Books say to use 5% of your gross revenue for Advertising. But if I don\’t make back that $450 I feel that I am a failure. In the past I have just made back the booth fee and feel good that I have gotten many referrals. People give me their name, address, email, & phone number etc to be contacted for a photo sitting…but many times when I contact them they are no longer interested!! What am I going wrong?
I NEED TO MAKE THE DECISION ABOUT THE PET EXPO BY THURSDAY…I don\’t really have extra money to spare. Credit card? The Expo isn\’t until May 8, 2010. I hear that you must spend money to get money. Most people that are going that I have called (due diligence)are not selling anything, just promoting themselves.
I know you can not make the decision for me, but I would like your input.

I love all the help you give to me. A couple of things I really need to work on for 2010 are more marketing and getting into the pet photography end of the business. I have alot of long term goals in my head but need to do the short term to get there. Like I would totally like to redo my studio. Also I would like to learn more about what your camera settings are Scott the you use in the studio, I love all the digital props but want to make sure my photos are as good as they can be to start. Thanks for all your support.
Scott, I can’t thank you enough for the video’s you have shared with us, and for all you do with New Portrait Biz! You and Lisa have been a Godsend with all you share about the business! You have given much encouragement and shown such concern and care for your subscribers, and for that I thank you both!
My goal for 2010 is to build my photography studio, and have Everlasting Memories in Time up and running this summer! We have purchased the land and are in the process of acquiring a strip of land (paper road) to build the proper size studio. My resolution for the new year is to get my business and web site up and running, and to the learn everything there is to know about the business of photography!
May the new year 2010 bring much success with NPB, and with your beautiful family!
Evelyn
I am with you Scott all 100% I am writing all my stuff i CAN do in 2010! For some time i just wanted to do so many many things (but couldn’t afford it) i wanted to go to so many places in the world BUT in 2010 I’m gonna make it happened my…. Financial freedom will turn couldn’t into I CAN and I am going to be free like a bird!
)
Scott, you\’ve published a wealth of videos and blogs that have been very helpful and instructive but this blog/video is the most important message you\’ve ever delivered. And you\’ve made this point before in some of the videos of your NPB – to write down your goals and the steps you need to be taking. I admit I just haven\’t done this to the degree I\’ve needed to yet. Still I\’m extremely pleased with the progress I\’ve made just by mentally focusing my efforts. But I know I could be progressing so much more rapidly if I actually took the time to write down my goals and itemize some steps to achieing them. I did this back in my college days with the Franlin Planner and I owe much of my success to that. It\’s time to get back into those old habits.
Toward that end I\’m going to list out a few of my goals here on this post but more importantly I\’m going to spend an hour on New Years day getting my goal journal and 2010 planner started.
Here\’s my immmediate goals off the top of my head. Get my apartment re-arranged for my new at-home studio. I have nearly all the basick equipment I need to get started including a backdrop stand, two muslines (one black and one white), a speedlight with wireless remote and a couple of reflectors, stands and misc items.
Build a portfolio of prints and online images of children\’s and family portraits using friends and co-workers.
Create my web page so I can start marketing. I have a domain registered thanks to you Scott but need to start building the page once I get a good portfolio base.
Start a system for organizing email addresses.
Participate in one fund raiser by April to start building prospective customers. Just do it and re-evaluate and do another one. I have an idea already that really hits home with me.
My initial goal is to get 200 email addresses and then offer 5 portrait sessions on a Saturday and see what happens.
Start reading the book \"Marketing without Advertising\". I have it, just haven\’t sat down with it yet.
I could go on and on now that I got started.
The \"why\" ?? I\’m in a desperite need of a new way to support myself. I currently do hard physical work for low pay in a high stress environmnet. How I got where I\’m at is a story for another day but when I bought my first dSRL a little over a year ago I got hooked on photography and just knew that I\’d love to make it my profession. I love everything about it, the creative process, the technical and computer skills, the people skills, the marketing skills, the social networking skills. I have a background in all that stuff and it just seems to fit me perfectly. Plus I\’ve recently discovered the joy and satisfaction of providing families with treasured memories. And this has become increasingly important to myself as I\’ve gotten older. I am appreciating more and more the value of quality family portraits. And I love focusing on one thing and becoming very good at it. This is something I want to be professional at.
Well sorry to be so long winded but this blog really hit me. It\’s time to take the next step in getting focused on making this happen.
Scott you\’ve really changed my life since last July when I signed up. And I\’ve barely scratched the surface of your NPB. But I\’m really happy with what I\’ve accomplished so far. I\’ve had some disappointing moments but I\’ve had some successes that I\’m really proud of. I have to say it again, my life and really changed and improved since I got hooked up with NPB last July. My goals really seem achievable. I just know I can make this happen.

Scott,
I want to start by saying that what you do is absolutly amazing. I’ve spent so much money on school and I was still lost. I came accross your videos and I havent stopped watching them since. I have been wanting to start my business for quite some time now and as it turns out, your teachings have been the missing link. For that I would like to say thank you. You are the Tony Robbins of the photography business world.
In 2010, I WILL be running my own photography business. I am due back at my job in 2 weeks from a 4 month sick leave, I have no intentions of going back. I am taking a very big risk in my life, I am going to take every action I need to to make this happen using every resource at my disposal and turning my talent into a full time career. Thank you for your insperation and for clearing up a lot of doubts in my mind. For the first time in my life I am about to take a leap and I am not affraid. I am ready to face all of the consiquences both good and bad. You have not only taught me marketing, business, and photography but you taught me to believe in myself and to be confident in the future I am about to pursue. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You.

ps. I wish you success in everything you do! and a great 2010. I look forward to seeing more of you in the future. Good Luck and happy new year!
Goal:
Learn my camera more. Increase my knowledge to start my business. One goal is to create a customer base for my business.
My first goal is to catch up on my videos of Scott’s. I have fallen behind due to the holidays and I need to sit down and spend a couple days catching up with them.
Finally have my own website (www.scottwestlakephotography.com I built myself)and see my photos at approximately 10% of my full potential. This year I will complete my photo Journalism course and get out of my currently very negative job (Correctional Officer) with your help so far… this is definately the case… cheers to all for 2010
Hello Scott,
I think it is amazing what you are doing for the photography community, and I am very grateful for the unselfish stance you have taken to help us all. May the coming year bring you and your family many blessings! I have only just joined your group, so I have a bit of catching up to do, but one of my goals for 2010 is to master my camera and utilize its potential to record many happy memories for people around me. God bless you! Brian.
Hi Scott,
I have been a subscriber with you for a while now. I also bought one of your products(NPB 1.0 lite) before you had to change the name. I really want to thank you for what you are doing for all of us. I have been interested in pet photography for a long time, but with no idea on how or where to start.
My goals for 2010 are:
1. I will be taking a class in Entrepreneurship Essentials at the college in January 2010.
2. I need to upgrade my digital camera. I have a 5mp point and shoot. And I will need to learn how to use the camera a little better. I have had cameras since I was a teenager.
3. Start to put down on paper my plans on how to get my pet photography business started.
I think this is enough for now, but I will have more in the notebook you mentioned. Thank You so much for the tips. Just keep them coming, can\’t wait to see what you are doing in 2010.

First, thank you Scott and Lisa for giving those of us new to photography a fantastic way to get started in our own business. NPB has been an awesome tool for me.
My goal for 2010 is to grow my business and reach the level of being completely debt free and able to help other people as well. I have to many things on my wish list as far as camera gear is concerned to list them all here. But they will be in my journal just as soon as I get that done.
Thanks once again,
Judy
thank you.,
Dear Scott,
My biggest obstacles are trusting my own skills and the fear of failure. My 19 year old daughter was killed in a car accident last month and she was my greatest cheerleader. I owe it to her memory to not let her encouragement be in vain. I’ve recently purchased your course and believe it will be the push I need to follow those dreams.
I’ve been a “blog stalker” for about a year now.
Scott,
I am so glad I found your site and have gotten involved. I can’t wait to get started with my photography business mostly because I love taking great pictures and interacting with people and pets. Thank you for so much information. I am looking forward to learning more about photoshop as well. Since I am retired, the money aspect is not that important as getting better skills pertaining to photography. But it will be nice to supplement our income with a hobby that I so enjoy. Thank you,
Scott and folks,
I am a full-time Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. This is a great career and well-compensated. BUT I LOVE photography and so I want to start my own part-time Senior/Portrait business this coming year. I want to do this to feed my desire for new equipment without taking anything away from my family for my hobby. I was lucky enough to second shoot for a state championship HS volleyball tourn here a few months ago and that gave me a lot of insight into the life of a photographer. Today I am starting to work on my business plan to do my due diligence and get my ducks in a row. I know lots of people in my town of 50K who do this part time and off the books. I plan to be totally legit with a business name, Tax ID, and priviledge license, and membership in at least one professional photog organization. I will also explore some way I can provide service to my community with my photography.
Scott, My plans are to make at least 30K in the new year. As times are hard and a lot of people are out of work including myself, I plan to host several photo parties each month with specials also being offered.
Thanks Scott and Lisa,
For all you have done and given to all of us eager and up-coming photographers. Your products, teachings and dedication is so valuable and rewarding. I appreciate all you do.
My goals for 2010 will be furthured in part because of your video teachings and consistant encouragement. It is my goal to set forth a full-time business during this year with promotional pricing and events that will hopefully kick-start my business and keep me moving forward.
I will continue to look for your posts and videos for instruction and guidance throughout the coming year.
Thanks again for all you do and may your new year be blessed and profitable as well.
Scott and Lisa,
Thanks for all the advice you have given in 2009. Although I am slowly building my biz, the tips have come in very handy. I am going to dream big in 2010 and hopefully get even closer to opening my own studio.
I would like to take pictures of a dozen seniors this year. The most I have ever done is 5. I would also like to do a dozen families this year.
I know to some that may seem like very little, but with raising a family and working another job, I have to take baby steps. I would also like to sell at least one of my landscape photos.
Thanks again for all the advice and continued support!
~Rochelle
Hello Scott,
Thanks for all you have done and the great videos. I have been a part time photographer for four years now and love it. Through that time, I have discovered that photographing children, seniors, and families are my favorite. “Theme” portraiture for children ages 6 months to 10 years is going to be my primary focus from here on out however, because I am moving into the photo fundraiser spectrum. I have a passion for helping childen and this is the way that I can enjoy and do what I love while helping out children in the process. My goals for 2010 include hosting at least 6 photo fundraisers and 12 portrait parties in addition to regular portrait sessions. I am going to need a new vehicle this year and my goal is to get my photography debt paid off and enough money to pay cash for a vehicle that has about 15-20,000 miles on it. My husband has been my biggest supporter. Without his encouragement, I would not be where I am today because the “fear” of failure, has always been in the way of me being successful. In the past, I have always tended to quit or lose focus just before I get to the finish line. Focus is a big issue with me because I am very right brained and am always looking at the “big” picture instead of breaking it down into baby steps and keeping them in the forefront. I look forward to this year and plan on reaching my goals, Lord willing. Have a wonderful and Happy New Year.
Scott,
Thanks for all your suggestions on the blog, they are great! I currently operate a sports photography business and plan on expanding into seniors and family portraits for 2010. I want to host 2 portrait parties per month and photograph 12 seniors throughout the year.
Hey Scott, Lisa & Family,
This year I decided that my love for the craft was stronger than the fear or ridicule & failure. I have a hard time understanding the technical side of photography, f-stop, aperture, ect, I have a great imagination for the poses I just don’t understand settings & lighting to get the shot right. I learn hands on not here read this, yet I’m so scared of looking ignorant when everyone else get’s it but me that I don’t speak up. But not this year, 2010, I am stepping up and using your digital backgrounds, I am asking “what do you mean, show me?” until I get it. This year I want to learn, grown and make money doing what I love “photography”, while having fun in the process.
No more will I have your backgrounds on my computer untouched & not used, nor will your Digital studio in a box sit upon my shelf looking pretty and collecting dust. No more turning down friends who ask me to please take some pictures of their kid’s, pets ect. 2010 I’m saying “yes” I need the practice, and if it’s not perfect that’s OK I’ll learn from my mistakes and move on. It’s time to step out of the comfort box and stumble & even occasionally fall, for that is the only way I shall learn. By doing this I “will”, not “hopefully”, I Will, be able to quit waiting on tables which I hate and instead be able to do my passion on my time “PHOTOGRAPHY”!!!
So thank you Scott,Lisa & Family for the forum, and everything you do for us – may you and yours have a bountiful New Year.
Thanks & lot’s of love, hug’s & kisses

Hi Scott in 2010 I would like to get my business going and to make enough money to pay my bills on time so that I can be with my kids more and not have to worry about where the bill money is going to come from. Thanks for all the vedio and I look forward in to bbuying your proto biz when it comes out in febaery
Hi Scott,
I don’t know about anyone else but, I tend to be the kind of person that can be stopped by a flood of ideas. I am so excited about the potential of your programs that I tend to get overwhelmed. It’s like I don’t know what to do first. However, I know that I definitely need to learn my camera better. I would like to be able to operate it in manual mode should the need arise. I also need an external flash and bounce card. I should be able to purchase those very soon. I will make a 12month calendar highlighting holidays to promote monthly specials – almost done. So… my primary goal for the next 90 days is to do at least 1-2 shoots a week and to pass out at least 5-10 buisiness cards a day.
Hi Scott,
i would like to take this time to say THANK YOU! for all your help and motivation, I plan for 2010 to take my portrait biz to the next level, the website, holiday events and some work with children are all on my plate for the new year.I like the idea of setting the goals to keep me on track.
Thanks Again Tenesha Worldwide
I\’m finally launching my business – Pat Wilson Photography! I\’ve done my homework, gathered my tools, and mapped out my plan of action. My business cards are on order, tomorrow I obtain my business license, and this afternoon I have an appointment with a mother and daughter to plan my first Senior session.
~~Of course I hope to make some money (which will go towards some fun things like travel and photo workshops), but more importantly it will keep me socially and mentally active (I just retired – forced by a layoff), and I will fill a void in our small community!
~~Scott and Lisa, thank you so much for providing NewPortraitBiz – you\’re making a difference in a lot of lives.
Hello Scott:
Well to be totally honest, you are the only encouragement I have had to start my own business (and God)… I found one of your you tube tutorials, and from then on, you have kept me in a positive attitude, and helped me to move forward. When I saw your tutorial about how you started out, I thought I could do that!
Since Oct 09, I’ve been on my way to my own studio, learning my camera, and many other things. I’ve mainly been shooting family and friends, but since the New Year, I’ve had a few people email me about taking their portraits, one wedding, and one senior … so I’m excited … I want to get into the digital props, but I wanted to feel comfortable with the studio and photoshop first …
I just want to make around $2000 a month, so I can stay home, and really show my husband I can do this. He’s currently building me a studio in our basement, so I’m thrilled.
Thanks again for all the encouragement and help. It does mean a lot … I can’t wait to see how I do, and what this time next year brings for me and my business. Keep on with the blogs. I love them!
Scott, I\’m a newbee here. Just found your blog and joined the \"club\" since January. I\’ve been taking a few online photo classes through the local college the last year. I\’m really wanting to make a good income and name for myself in photography.
Goals include doing my daughter & her friend\’s senior pictures…taken a few the friends mother is excited with what I\’ve done…however I know I can do better. Going to try the white background and order your urban digi backgrounds…I think the girls will be excited because they will be different than what every other senior has done. Daughter is editor of the yearbook so I\’ve gotten a peek at what\’s being turned in. With your help I can do some thing different!
Want to earn enough with pics I take now to buy a lighting set and update my lens for my camera.
Setting goals of 2 photo sets a month for the first 6 months & some increase monthly after that…I haven\’t done any advertising so starting out small.. Figure better to excede plans than to fail. Will be raising the bar as time goes on
